‘The Corporation’ – Full Movie Now Free

Sunday, November 26th, 2006

The Corporation is a full-length documentary film that explores the rise, nature, and impact of the corporate entity on society. The documentary probes the lack of accountability and morality that arises in a system where corporate entities are granted the same rights as human beings.

The filmmakers have released a freely downloadable Bittorrent version of the film. We think it’s very cool that the creators are attempting to make their argument heard far and wide. However, we also know that the phrase “downloadable Bittorrent version” is enough to scare most people into not watching the film.

This is where Democracy Player comes in very handy! Use the one-click subscription link at the bottom of the page, and Democracy will automatically download the entire two-and-a-half hour documentary, plus a bonus interview with the creators. If you don’t have Democracy on your computer, just download and install it, then click the subscription link below.

By making their work available, free of charge, the filmmakers behind The Corporation are taking a relatively bold risk. If you like what you see, we suggest you support the filmmakers.

Note: Large Bittorrent downloads sometimes take a while to “warm up”. Please give the film ample time to download (possibly over night).

Dumping Your Database

Wednesday, November 22nd, 2006

Occasionally when testing early versions of Democracy Player, the database will get corrupted and you’ll lose your channels. Sorry about that! Chris has just added a feature to the latest RC2 of 0.9.2 which will let you dump out your current database so that you don’t lose it. Here’s how it works:

Update: I misunderstood how database dump works when I talked to Chris. You can’t use a dump to restore a database (though that would be nice, huh). The dump gives you a file that you can send to us to help us debug database related problems that you may be having.

To dump the database at any time, just go to the search tab and type this: LET’S TEST DTV: DUMP DATABASE.

Your database will be dumped to:

Windows: C:\Documents and Settings\[you]\Application Data\Participatory Culture Foundation\Democracy Player\Support\database-dump.xml

Linux: ~/.democracy/database-dump.xml

Mac: Somewhere near your database, which is in User/Library/Application Support/Democracy

DP Windows 0.9.2 RC1 up for testing

Tuesday, November 21st, 2006

The Release Candidate 1 is up for Windows right now. Also, the source is up in a tarball. We’ll have a Mac build in the morning.

We’re especially interested in whether any Windows users are having problems (we think we’ve fixed the problems in the last nightly builds). Give it a whirl:

Update: RC2 is up.

New Testing Builds

Saturday, November 18th, 2006

We have new testing versions of Democracy Player 0.9.2. There are a few more things we’re working on, but this is almost final, so please let us know if you spot any problems. You should notice significantly reduced memory use (we still have more improvements to make) and improved speed and responsiveness.

Testing Versions

If you find a bug, please let us know. Thanks!

Update I should have warned that you should only try these testing builds if you are willing to possibly have some problems. These are still pre-release and have some serious bugs.
