Democracy Player 0.9.5 Testing Version

January 26th, 2007 by Nicholas Reville

We are getting close to releasing Democracy Player 0.9.5. This version has lots of new features and an interface overhaul, all of which I will detail soon. We’d love some help testing our latest version.

Testing Version

Warning: this is a testing version and may contain bugs (you might reset your channel subscriptions).

0.9.5 will be the first version with proxy support, so if that’s something you need, try this out to make sure it works for you.

If you find any bugs, please let us know: File a bug report.

We know of one small bug: the new sorting buttons don’t work on channel folders. We’re fixing that today.

Also, we’re wondering about another bug: does this build seem slower to switch between channels on Windows? Does it freeze unexpectedly at times? We saw that with recent builds, but we’re not sure if it’s still happening. Any info would help us investigate.

I downloaded the DP v0.9.5 and found the change is focusing on UI. Great improvement, but disappointedly that I still does not see anything related to bug #3422 (https://develop.participatoryculture.org/trac/democracy/ticket/3422) about setting up an UI for those deaf or hard-to-hear or non-native speaker to turn on the captions or subtitles when accompanied with the video.
There has been some hot talk in the internet but most of the players (such as itunes ..) does not listen to. I really look forward to seeing the DP can make this happen in the near future.

Cha! and nice job has done from you lovely guys!

I want to help iron out any bugs, but the links for Windows download v0.9.2.1, NOT v0.9.5. How are we supposed to help?

  3. Hi Barry – In the http://participatoryculture.org/nightlies/ page linked to in the post, choose the most recent nightly version for Windows. When you install the program using the downloaded .exe, the version of the program will followed by a code. I have Mac OS, where this code is r4034, and it works probably in the same way with Windows. The program is not called v0.9.5 because version 0.9.5 is not yet an official release, I believe.

    Ahh. That explains it. Thanks.

I am on Windows XP sp2, and have not yet had any problem with this build, and no, it does not seem slower when switching channels. So far so good.
