Fundraising Success… $50K!!!

Wednesday, September 26th, 2007

I’m excited to report our fundraising victory! We recently passed the $50,000 mark, which was our goal for September. It’s a small but significant chunk of our overall budget and a great sign for the future of the project.

To everyone who was able to give, thank you sooooo much! Your gifts are helping push us, full speed ahead, into 2008. Every bit helps us improve the Miro experience, which in turn strengthens our mission to democratize TV.

The Miro developers are super focused and are moving quickly towards the next release — thanks again for your help!

And finally, I have a favor to ask — if you think Miro is great, share it with someone.

Showing Miro off to your three best friends is basically the same as making a donation. This type of outreach is absolutely critical to the success of the project, especially since we don’t have a marketing budget to speak of.

Here is my favorite strategy: when I see a channel I know a particular friend will like, I subscribe to it. When it’s convenient, I show that friend the channel(s) and play a few compelling videos. In the end, I always offer to help them install and customize Miro — when the channel recommendations are right on, friends often take me up on the offer.

For those who undertake this mission: thanks in advance! Your enthusiasm and dedication mean a whole lot to us.

Feature Additions from the Community

Monday, September 24th, 2007

People have been requesting the ability to mark ‘unwatched’ videos as ‘watched’.

A Miro user, Tim C., submitted some code along with the following comment: “Just starting miro hacking, this is a feature I’ve been craving for a while so I’m pleased it was so simple to add :)

Our developers reviewed the code and it was rolled into the application in two days. Thanks for the feature addition, Tim!

We have a history of users submitting fixes and patches (especially for our Linux version), which is great. I just get extra-specially excited when we get user submitted features that are immediately visible and usable by everyone.

I think it would be great to post a big thanks with names of our code contributors, but I wasn’t able to readily obtain these names. This leads me to believe that we’re missing an opportunity to build a stronger volunteer development community — if you’ve submitted code patches for Miro or are thinking of getting involved, you should say hi.

In closing, I’d like to say THANKS to all the folks who have already submitted code to Miro!

Fundraising: Half-Way to the Goal. Amazing!

Monday, September 17th, 2007

Donations have been coming in steadily since we began the campaign, and we recently had some large gifts. We are just over $27K, which puts us over the half-way mark! However, we’re going to have to keep pushing like hell to any chance of reaching $50,000.

It is critical that we keep this momentum — if you have been thinking of donating, now is the perfect time. This funding will keep keep our developers coding past the big 1.0 release. Big thanks to those who have already contributed, you’re making all the difference.

Oh, and we just added a meter, so you can track our progress from the front page of the Miro Guide.

Miro Needs Help (from you!)

Thursday, September 13th, 2007

PCF, which makes Miro, is a non-profit organization. That means no one can own us and we don’t take for-profit investment. That also means that we rely on donations to fund everything we do. We’re working towards Miro 1.0 and we are making big improvements to the Miro Guide, but we’re running very low on funds right now.

We’ve set a goal of raising $50,000. Can you help? Make a Donation to Miro.

We’re also experimenting with promoting the fundraiser in the Miro Guide, since it’s the place where we connect most often to our users. I made this video for the fundraiser– intended for the Guide, but I’ll post it here too.

Fundraiser update:

Thanks to everyone who has donated to Miro so far! We have raised about $5,000, which is a great start. As someone who’s been working on Miro for years, it’s so exciting to see that people care enough about the project to donate money to it. Thank you so much.

But we still need a lot more support to reach our goal, so if you can give, please do!

The video is updated too:

I’m Convinced! I will donate.
