new comment system

December 10th, 2008 by Nicholas Reville

We’re experimenting with the suddenly popular IntenseDebate comment system. We think it might be really useful on the Miro Guide someday, but want to try it here first. Unfortunately, it looks like it hides previous comments from before today… not sure if there’s a way to change that. Old comments should be syncing up in a couple hours.

So, what do you think about IntenseDebate for comments on this blog?

I can't get the "try it" to work so I am unable to decide if this is what I'm looking for or not. Frustrating

  2. Matt Kivela says:

This is Matt the PCF Sysadmin testing.

  3. Matt_Kivela says:

And this is Matt again via OpenID

  4. grfgguvf says:

Looks great, but why do I need an IntenseDebate account? They could just create one automatically…

  5. PCF says:

(This is Matt the Sysadmin again)

I can verify grfgguvf's observation and I'm trying to dope out this problem.

For what it's worth, I've posted an inquiry at IntenseDebate's getsatisfaction forum http://getsatisfaction.com/intensedebate/topics/r…

    I hope this is ajaxified… ;-) <test>

  7. Nicholas, thanks for giving IntenseDebate a try. Your comments were temporarily hidden while they were imported into IntenseDebate. Sorry about the confusion – we're working on updating the UI to clarify this. Feel free to give me a shout with any questions.

  8. LukeG says:

Did you look into Disqus at all?

  9. PCF says:

Ok, grfgguvf's problem was resolved this weekend. It was a bug on the IntenseDebate side.

I did some researching on ID when Obama's change.gov started using it. So far, so good. But, I don't understand how they plan to make money. Until I see a business model, I am still waiting for the trap door to open, revealing the trap.

It seems like your old comment system shows up if you have JavaScript disabled (for instance if you are using NoScript in Firefox), which means that you get no indication that the experience would be different if you have JavaScript enabled (i.e. you would be able to use IntenseDebate). Also, with the comment I just posted on the NRK post ( http://www.getmiro.com/blog/2008/12/nrk-distribut…, sorry for the double post btw) I still see the same problem as grfgguvf, the link to the comment ( http://www.getmiro.com/#IDComment13647127) links to the Miro front page, not to the blog post.

One more problem: if there is something wrong with the IntenseDebate site (as happened just a few minutes ago when I was trying to verify my account, I got "504 Gateway Time-out" and "502 Bad Gateway" errors) then you cannot view or post any comments on the blog post.

Also, what happens if IntenseDebate goes out of business? Do all comments on sites that use it disappear, or are they stored on the sites themselves as well as at IntenseDebate?

  14. AndrewM says:

One thing I forgot: on your old comment system, it says when commenting on a certain post will close. E.g. for this post, it says "Comments for this post will be closed on 19 January 2009." Do comments close after a certain time when using IntenseDebate? If so, you might want to display the message then as well.
