Miro 2.5.4 release candidate testing

November 22nd, 2009 by janet

We are preparing for a Miro 2.5.4 release.  This has a bunch of data-handling related fixes, fixes for some edge-case crashers, and some other stuff.  It also contains an update to vlc 1.0.3 which should fix some Windows 7 compatibility issues.

We’d appreciate it if you could take the time to download and test out the build for windows, os x, or source.

Release notes and the roadmap for 2.5.4 provide more details about the changes.

If you could help us test, that would be invaluable.  We’d like to be confident that the database update changes work for a large number of people with a variety of different usage scenarios.

Testing is also good excuse to spend some time getting through your podcast backlog or spend some time looking for new content on the Miro Guide!

There are also regression testcases for anyone who wants to participate in the more formal testing process.

The Windows link is wrong, just need to use a .exe on the end instead of .dmg:

2.5.4 has fixed VLC's rendering on my Windows 7 64bit machine. No more blockiness when viewing fullscreen!

The Ask toolbar Don't Install button is confusing, took me a second to notice it was even there. Stick to checkboxes and make sure they're all unchecked by default, spamming unobservant users machines when stupid toolbars and search stealing browser changes is just evil. I know you need to make some money, but this isn't the way to go about it.

Performance is the main turn off for miro…. It just consumes so much cpu.. is there a way you can concentrate on making it lighter?

I haven't noticed CPU usage being an issue, maybe there's a problem with your profile. 0% when not doing anything, 0-1% when downloading. Memory usage on the other hand is quite high, over 100mb, not that i care much with 4gB of ram being cheap.

I hope this version fixes the 30 – 40 sec start time in XP. I only use it for audio and dislike waiting for the Miro Guide screen. It would be great if there was a command line switch to say start in the Audio folder instead!
That said Miro is great! I used Juice for years before this but Miro is a big step up – so thanks!

This piece of shit tries to install crapware (ask toolbar)

    BE WARNED

Avoid this software till the programmers have become honest people

It was just a typo with the download links. DMG is a package for Macs and EXE is for Windows, both the Windows and OS X links were pointing to the Mac version but it's fixed now.
